Drama
"We must all do theatre, to find out who we are, and discover who we could become" Augusto Boal
The curriculum seeks to develop the key Drama skills through imaginative and interactive learning opportunities. Lessons are designed to encourage students to be both reflective and analytical in the way they express their opinions. Pair work, small group work and whole group exercises develop these skills which are continuously assessed to ascertain student progress. The department encourages students from all backgrounds to discover and challenge existing views through informed discussion and group practical work, which is central to the manner in which we develop our students’ skills of analysis and communication. Embedded in the curriculum are regular retrieval moments, both at the start of each topic and at the start of some lessons. Combined with interleaving strategies, when prior learning or concurrent learning is ‘spliced’ into the lessons, the students’ ability to analyse and discuss becomes quite sophisticated.
Aims
- To enable students to be familiar with a body of knowledge, skills, techniques and vocabulary related to Drama.
- To create an atmosphere where students wish to learn and to value each other. In doing so, to encourage empathy, so that each student approaches their work and each other with tolerance and insight.
- To employ teaching methods and resources that allow all students to have equal access to Drama and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.
- To share good practice, embrace change and constantly develop the curriculum to enhance and diversify student opportunity.
- To provide a range of differentiated teaching and learning activities which aim to provide intellectual challenge and develop physical and social skills
Drama is central to the cultural life of the school. Through Drama lessons, extra-curricular activities and trips we seek to give all students access to live theatrical experiences. The department is actively engaged in making theatre accessible and stimulating and we pride ourselves on producing high-quality, inventive work, both in and out of classrooms. We see Drama as a means of learning about the world and ourselves and are determined to extend students’ opportunities to explore, analyse and appreciate Drama and Theatre as art forms.
